Since granite for our house was a very large purchase I visited five granite companies in the area. I was amazed at the poor organization for nearly all of these companies. At three they were not able to give me an estimate during the visit even though I came with a scaled drawing. It appeared at each only one person could give an estimate and he was out on an installation. Most promised a fax estimate the next day but only two provided an estimate in less than a week. One of the companies did give me an estimate and my brother in law chose to go with them. My philosophy after dealing with contractors on four home constructions is that if they can't be responsive with an estimate they can't possibly deliver good service. After visiting four we happened on the ad in Johnson City paper for Astro Granite. With all the fly by night granite companies in the area I was very apprehensive. I called them and they came to my house, measured and gave me a price (not an estimate) immediately and it included the tear out my old countertop, something that not one other company would even attempt. They did not have the granite in stock that we chose at the other company but they worked diligently to find what we wanted sending us many pictures. Still apprehensive I checked their references and visited their shop in Bristol. Their references checked out completely and the visit to their shop resulted in us finding a slab we liked better for less money. At the shop we met more of the staff and everyone made us feel not like customers but like they were going to do this work for their own family.
We decided to go with Astro and we were not disappointed. They had our granite fabricated and installed completely in about one week from order to their exit. They did everything they promised including tear out, disconnecting plumbing and cleaning up spic and span on a Friday in about 7 hours. Everyone we met at Astro was hard working, polite and extremely competent. The tear out of our old countertop which was nailed every six inches was very difficult but they didn't even come close to scratching our cabinets. They never complained about some of our unsquare walls, they just did a beautiful installation.
My brother in law's installation on the other hand was a nightmare. They promised to come every day for over a week and took two full days to install 40% less square footage than mine in his new home. In the end they cracked the counter top in three places around his cook top and repaired it with epoxy. If you know where the cracks are you can still feel and see them. I feel bad that he has a brand new house and paid a lot more than Astro would have charged and bought a countertop with a crack in it
In summary Astro Granite is a great company that did such a good job that I wrote this unsolicited testimonial. I will be telling all my friends and relatives about Astro and the tradition they have started of high quality work done in short time and delivering on every promise they made to me. They did a great job for me so If you need countertops they are the place to go.
